  25.             ILAN, the Israeli Academic Network, established in 1984,  is
  26.             dedicated  to  universities  and academic, medical, and non-
  27.             profit research institutes.  The network is widely used  for
  28.             scientific,  educational,  academic,  and research purposes:
  29.             commercial and political use is not allowed, either directly
  30.             or indirectly.

  32.             ILAN has installed six 64kb lines to create a central  high-
  33.             speed  backbone  between  Israel's seven major universities.
  34.             ILAN has international connections to EARN and Nysernet.
  35.  
  36.             ILAN's former NJE traffic and all EARN/Bitnet  network  ser-
  37.             vices  now  run  on  ILAN's TCP/IP backbone.  We plan a 56kb
  38.             link  to  Nysernet  (the  New  York  State  Educational  and
  39.             Research  Network),  a  regional  network  of NSFNET (the US
  40.             National Science Foundation Network).  In the interim,  ILAN
  41.             will connect to Nysernet via a 9.6kb IP link.

  43.             Our backbone supports "Aleph," a project for the  computeri-
  44.             zation  and  interconnection  of all university library card
  45.             catalogs, which is near to completion.  This  system  allows
  46.             students  and  faculty  to  search  card  catalogs  at local
  47.             university libraries as well as libraries located  at  other
  48.             universities within Israel.  Since this system was developed
  49.             long before  the  ILAN  project,  it  was  based  on  DECNET
